Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy Is the Winner of the Green Transition Business Competition 2024
The winner of the yearly Green Transition Business Competition organised by Biocluster Finland was announced on Wednesday, September 5, at The Green Transition Gala in Helsinki. The evaluation criteria of the competition were innovativeness, growth potential, implementation ability and environmental impact. This year’s winner was Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy from Kokkola.
Description of Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy’s Operations
Hycamite produces clean hydrogen and industrial-quality solid carbon by splitting methane using proprietary zero-emission technology. It is based on the thermo-catalytic decomposition (TCD) of methane molecules. In other words, we break the methane with our catalyst and heat.
Our novel methane pyrolysis technology requires only 13% of the energy needed to produce hydrogen by electrolysis. As a cutting-edge carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology, Hycamite’s solution enables the creation of carbon sinks, providing clients with industrial-quality carbon fit for demanding applications, such as Li-ion batteries, composite materials and filter purifiers.

The Selection Criteria and the Award Ceremony
The prestigious jury of the competition consisted of representatives of Business Finland, Finnvera, Aalto University, Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), University of Oulu, Centria University of Applied Sciences and Taaleri Bioindustry VC.
The jury chose the winner based on a preliminary evaluation and a pitch presentation. In the overall evaluation, the top three companies were EVA Solutions Group Oy, FabPatch Oy and Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy.
Jarno Valkeapää from Business Finland, acting as the jury’s representative, announced Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy as the winner. The jury’s reasoning for choosing the winner was as follows:
- Hycamite TCD Technologies Oy supports the green transition on a large scale. Future growth is made possible by the enormous demand for both of their end products. The technology is well protected. Hycamite TCD Technologies is a great example of the commercialisation of academic research.
The award was presented by VTT’s Executive Vice President Tua Huomo. In their speeches, both Jarno Valkeapää and Tua Huomo emphasised the high level of the competition and thus the difficulty of choosing the winner. The green transition needs a great variety of solutions, which are difficult to rank.
